Background
----------

  _Going to Extremes_ was the short-lived ABC series created by the team of
Falsey & Brand (St. Elsewhere, Northern Exposure) with Frank South (Melrose
Place).  The show made its run from September 1992 through January 1993,
when because of its poor showing in the ratings, the show was taken off the
air.
  It is the story of the students and educators at Croft University medical
school, based in Jantique.  Jantique is a fictitious island (really Jamaica)
located in the Caribbean.  The majority of the students attend because they
were unable to obtain acceptance into a school in the U.S., so many tend to
transfer.


Cast of Characters (alphabetically by actor's name)
---------------------------------------------------

Cheryl Carter (Erika Alexander)
  Cheryl is one of the new students to the school.  She is one of the best
students at Croft academically, but has a hard time adjusting to living in
squalor in Jantique.  Originally, she is from New York.

Dr. Alice Davis (June Chadwick)
  The insatiable professor of internal medicine from Oxford who has an
unusual outlook on life.  She prefers to control all her relations with men
and does not believe in love.

Dr. Henry Croft (Roy Dotrice)
  The founder of Croft University.  Croft is an outspoken individual who
became a multi-millionaire ($55 million) from a patent for a joint
replacement system.  He has since moved to Jantique, bought a resort, and
converted it into the Croft University.

Kim Selby (Camilo Gallardo)
  Kim is the "zen" character in the show.  He lives at the house with the
other students, but fits in with the society very well.  He can often be
found performing Tai Chi or philosophizing.

Kathleen McDermott (Joanna Going)
  Kathleen is slightly older than most of the other students, having
pursued a career in journalism after college.  After tiring of writing the
"advice to the lovelorn" column for the local paper, she decided to seek a
change and apply to med school.  She has lost many ties with her home and
is open to the new society and embraces it quickly.  She is from Minnesota.

Alex Loren (Daniel Jenkins)
  Alex is the happy-go-lucky member of the group.  He has come to Jantique
because he figured that if he is going to get a second rate medical
education, it might as well be on an island paradise.  He is from Chicago.

Dr. Jack Van De Weghe (Charles Keating)
  An Australian professor of anatomy whose charismatic ways win him the
student's respect as well as many women.

Charlie Moran (Andrew Lauer)
  Charlie is the insecure student of the group who live in the house on the
shore.  Though he spends most of waking hours studying (and most of his
sleeping hours worrying about it), Charlie's academic performance usually
leaves him on the verge of flunking.  He is from Worcester, Massachusetts.

Dr. Michael Norris (Carl Lumbly)
  A native of Jantique who has returned to the island as the Dean of
Croft U. and also a doctor of pediatrics.  He graduated from Johns Hopkins
University and has an ex-wife and son (Jeffrey) living in the United
States.  Dr. Norris also runs a free medical clinic where the students are
required to put in some time.

Colin Midford (Robert Duncan McNeill)
  Colin is the cynical student who has been attending Croft for quite some
time.  He has constantly been attempting to transfer to a state-side
school, but without any luck.  He is from Vermont.


Recurring Characters
--------------------

Solomon (Stafford Ashani)
  The proprietor of the local food establishment which the characters
frequent.  He is a difficult person to know and is particularly callous to
outsiders.

Ben Harrison (Gil Bellows)
  Ben is a rejected student who shows up one semester after our regular cast
and manages to finagle his way into the university.  He is an army veteran of
Desert Storm.

Desmond (Christopher Daley)
  A native boy who befriends Charlie but whose patois is rather
unintelligible.

Delia (Leonie Forbes)
  The maid who comes with the house that the five students are renting.
Delia is her professional name, her given name is Cherish.

Roger (Delroy Lindo)
  A native who befriends Kathleen.

Carolyn Pierson	(Kathleen McNenny)
  A country girl from Wisconsin who comes to Croft University and woos Alex
away from the clutches of Dr. Davis.  She eventually gets her acceptance to
the University of Texas and transfers out of Croft University (and away from
Alex).

Nuey (Reginald "Jah Steve" Stephenson)
  A mysterious Rasta drummer who disappeared into the jungle years ago, and
who now holds mythical status with the Jantiquans. He periodically reveals
himself to Charlie, much to Charlie's consternation.

Sarah (Pauline Stone)
  The nurse at the clinic.

Beth Walters (Marina Taitt)
  One of the workers in the school's library.


Episodes
--------

1.1  Pilot
  Alex, Kathleen, Charlie, and Cheryl arrive in Jantique and run into a bit
of culture shock.  Colin takes action to save a reluctant patient that he
suspects may have diabetes.

1.2  "When Lovers Leap"
  Dejected over the news of her ex-boyfriend's plans to wed, Kathleen finds
hope as a 12-year-old patient explains his own broken heart.  Meanwhile,
Alex has an adventure with a "borrowed" centrifuge.  Charlie becomes
increasingly stressed over his studies.

1.3  "Tribes and Tribulations"
  Cheryl becomes attached to a patient.  Alex perseveres in his quest for
the passion flower.  Dr. Croft recruits players for his cricket team.

1.4  "De Heart of De Matter"
  Alex's indignant reaction to a theft accusation lands him in jail.
Cheryl, Kathleen, and Charlie engage in some field research to aid in a
diagnosis.  Kim builds a canoe using traditional methods.

1.5  "Send in the Gloves"
  Charlie's attempt to transport a severed finger becomes an odyssey.  As
the clinic's supplies dwindle, Kathleen and Colin must assist Drs. Norris
and Croft with emergency surgery.  Problems arise for Alex and Cheryl when
they buy a water heater.

1.6  "A Mon Needs a Maid"
  Cheryl hires a maid, unaware that the job is already filled.  A language
barrier hinders Charlie's attempts at a diagnosis.  A patient takes a shine
to Kathleen.

1.7  "A Bridge Too Far"
  Homesick Cheryl must deal with a patient who refuses treatment.  Charlie
and Kathleen regret not paying a toll.  Alex is anxious about undergoing a
hernia repair.

1.8  "Human Races"
  The pressure is on when Dr. Croft's ex-wife pays a visit to claim money
concealed during their divorce.  Charlie gets a tutor who is even more
stressed than he is.  Kim and Cheryl get close while preparing for a race.

1.9  "De Eye of De Needle"
  Charlie and Alex take tetanus vaccine to a remote village and discover a
tribal chief with a Hollywood flair.  Meanwhile, Cheryl suspects their maid
of theft, and Colin becomes a godfather.

1.10 "Perpetual Care"
  Colin learns a few lessons in life from a patient - a wise old fisherman
whose wife has recently died.  Meanwhile, Alex's toothache has him in
extreme pain, but Dr. Davis gets to the root of the problem.  Solomon tells
Charlie about a giant drummer.

1.11 "The Healing Arts"
  Dr. Croft commissions a video to promote his medical school, but the
film's auteur is a little hard on the doctor's ego.  Meanwhile, Alex shows
a new student around and Charlie goes into the jungle to help an ailing
Nuey.

1.12 "Sexual Perversity in Jantique"
  Alex is torn between two lovers:  the carnal Dr. Davis and the cute,
considerate Carolyn.  Meanwhile, Charlie proves that there really are good
spirits and Kathleen discovers that Delia is illiterate.

1.13 "A Caribbean Christmas"
  Kathleen and Colin get a little closer after riding a river in her
Christmas gift, a kayak.  Dr. Croft spreads some Christmas joy around the
island.  Meanwhile, Dr. Davis deals with Alex's rejection and Carolyn gets
a present that is sure to disappoint Alex.

1.14 "My Life as a Goat"
  Kathleen and Colin are called as witnesses in the case of a man who acts
like a goat.  Meanwhile, Charlie's debts force him to get a job...at
Solomon's.  Dr. Norris is crushed when his ex-wife interferes with his
son's visit.

1.15 "Cinema Jantique"
  The accreditation team from Missouri visits Croft University, but one of
the group's doctors has a bone to pick with Dr. Croft about a joint
replacement system.  Meanwhile, Alex reintroduces movies to the island and
Charlie goes exploring with Dr. Van De Weghe.


1.16 "Body Language"
  A new semester brings a rejected applicant who must convince Dr. Norris
that his academic record doesn't accurately reflect his will to become a
doctor.  Meanwhile, Dr. Davis taps Cheryl as her new friend and Charlie
looks for corpse donors.

1.17 "Bridesmaid Revisited"
  Roger and Beth choose Kathleen as the best "man" and Colin as the "maid"
of honor for their wedding.  Dr. Croft takes time out to sail to what he
thinks is a deserted island, only to find a wealthy computer genius who has
tried to drop out of society.  Ben saves a child's life.
